Mercury Pisces (Rx): Empathy Changes Everything

A short documentary crossed my radar today, and I’m left a bit teary, and in awe. It’s called Children Full of Life, and follows a class of 10-year-old children in Japan through one school year, with their loving and tough teacher Toshiro Kanamori.

What’s rare and remarkable, is that the children are encouraged to share their true feelings.

They write notebook letters and read them aloud, and in their vulnerable moments of sharing, Kanamori leads them to self-understanding in a gentle way. He says at one point, “Empathy is the greatest thing. There’s an expression I love: ‘Let people live in your heart.’”

What comes to mind for me watching it, is how being vulnerable is a risk. When the children let go and get emotional, there are times when the whole scene looks out of control. They are given space for raw emotion and to bring the private interior life into the public space of school. They are less isolated and don’t have to wear a mask at school, while hiding their feelings.

That’s the rare beauty of Kanamori’s method — he trusts the students enough to let them be real, and to be changed by the act of sharing. It’s illustrative of Mercury Pisces, when the whole class sends a message to heaven, so two students’ fathers will know they’ve got friends and not to worry. It’s moving to see the natural empathy there, and a teacher who cares enough to help them develop that most valuable of human traits.
